Oracle Warehouse Builder – An Approach to Migrating to Oracle Data Integrator

Streamlining the process of migrating from OWB to ODI.
Background: Many Oracle customers currently use the Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) product as part of their data warehouse environment. Oracle noted in an OWB Statement of Direction that the current release of OWB (11.2) is the terminal release of the product and that no future releases are envisages. Furthermore, future database releases beyond Oracle Database 12c Release 1 will not be certified with OWB 11.2. On this basis, OWB customers need to identify a strategy and approach to migrate from OWB.

Migrating to Oracle Data Integrator

Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) is Oracle’s flagship ELT product which offers significant benefits in terms of being heterogeneous, high performance, modular and SOA ready. Migrating from OWB to ODI is Oracle’s recommended migration strategy for OWB. Oracle provide the OWB to ODI Migration Utility which facilitates this migration. Further details on the migration utility are available here.

Migration Procedure

Full details of the migration procedure which employs the OWB to ODI Migration Utility are provided in the attached document. The procedure is summarised as follows:

  • The source version of OWB must be 11.2.0.3 or 11.2.0.4. An upgrade will be required if you are not on these versions.
  • Oracle database version 12.1.0.2.0 or higher be used.
  • Install OWB 11.2.0.4 on the database server and create a workspace.
  • Install ODI 12c.
  • Patch the environments.
  • Run the migration.

Aside from patching requirements, configuration changes, and a minor issue with the migration detailed in the attached document the migration process runs smoothly and significantly simplifies the migration process from OWB to ODI.
