Business Process Management – A Practical Application

Many of us are familiar with the term Business Process Management (BPM) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) but have not seen it implemented.

Many of us are familiar with the term Business Process Management (BPM) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) but have not seen it implemented. At Metalogic we recently used BPM and SOA technology to facilitate the definition and execution of business processes with a BPM suite. As part of this we implemented a BPM file management process which routed various files to various departments both inside and outside the organisation. This was a very simple application of BPM which resulted in a significant cost saving for our client by automating a process which previously required considerable manual intervention.

File and document management systems are ubiquitous in organisations both large and small. However a lot of organisations shy away from automating these processes as they fear high IT overhead to implement and support.

This is where the real advantage of using a BPM solution lies; a system analyst or IT savvy business user can quickly model and automate existing business processes or implement new processes with minimum IT overhead. Processes can easily be adjusted; a simple ‘drag and drop’ can enable an analyst to tweak business processes as your organisation evolves.

Here are just some of the reasons why your organization should consider BPM:

  • Automation: BPM enables an organisation to model and implement process automations.
  • Agility: The ability to adjust business processes at speed enables your organisation to adapt more quickly to changes in the market place and gain competitive advantage.
  • Standards: Processes are clear defined and documented in a graphical manner. This detail is available to all parties in the organisation.
  • New Partners: As your customer base grows, new partners may need you to support new ways of doing business.
  • Compliance: Business rules can be incorporated into the processes so organisational procedures can be enforced.

Would SOA and BPM benefit your organisation? Talk to us today to scope out the possibilities.
